- The theory test is the first vital step toward obtaining a full driving licence.
- The theory test must be taken first, although one need not pass the theory test before beginning practical driving lessons.
- The theory test is computer-based with two parts taken together.
- The first part of the theory test is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions which are answered using a touch-sensitive display. A score of 43 out of 50 is required to pass.
- The second part of the test is called "Hazard Perception" and involves watching video clips of driving situations. You must spot a potential hazard as quickly as possible and identify it by clicking a mouse button to score a point. A score of 44 out of 75 is required to pass.
PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST
- The driving test is a 38-40 minute drive taking in as many different road types as possible (town Centre, rural roads, dual carriageway & country lanes with various speed limits.
- 1 reverse manoeuvre
- A period of around 20 minutes of independent driving, where the candidate will be asked to follow road signs or asked to follow a Satellite Navigation System
- 1 in 3 candidates are asked to do the emergency stop
- As long as the candidate commits less than 16 minor faults and no serious or dangerous faults they will pass their test
- At the end of the test the examiner will explain the faults committed
